Understanding Refrigerator Noises

Ever wondered why refrigerators make noises and sought to understand what could be wrong?

Ever wondered why refrigerators make noises and sought to understand what could be wrong? The first thing to note is that a refrigerator making noise is not an unusual occurrence. It’s expected to make a sound because of the operation of the fan and compressor, among other components.

However, something might be wrong if it’s giving off an unusual sound. Identifying the sound and what might be causing it will make it easier to troubleshoot and possibly fix the problem without relying on a technician.

Identifying unusual refrigerator noises

There is no need to panic when you hear unusual noise from your refrigerator. Check out some common noises a refrigerator makes and how to fix them.

Rattling noise

A rattling noise from a refrigerator is likely caused by one of the fans in the appliance. It could be the condenser or evaporator fan. But the cause must be located before any action can be taken.

Condenser fan

To find out if the condenser fan is the issue, first, disconnect the refrigerator from the power supply and open the condenser fan. Next, check that the condenser fan is not damaged and that nothing is obstructing it. If that’s not the issue, use a multimeter to test the fan to determine its continuity and if the proper electrical connection is being made. If it shows no continuity, it will need to be replaced. If the issue isn’t remedied after replacing the fan, the problem may be a different fan.

Evaporator fan

To check the condition of the evaporator fan, unplug the refrigerator from the power supply and remove the fan cover. It is located on the inside panel at the back of the appliance. As with the previous section, check that the evaporator fan is not covered in ice, obstructed, or out of shape. If it is covered in ice, keep the refrigerator off to allow it to defrost. If the fan appears to be in good condition, test for continuity. If the result is negative, the fan needs to be replaced.

If both fans seem are in order and the noise persists, it might be a more technical issue; consult a repairman.

Rattling noise from the bottom

A noise coming from the bottom of the appliance is likely caused by the drain pan not being correctly placed. Putting it back in place should fix the noise.

Buzzing or humming sound

A buzzing or humming sound may indicate the appliance light is experiencing problems. Replacing it will solve the issue. You may be able to accomplish that alone on some brands, but some will require hiring a professional.

Clicking sound from the ice maker

A disconnected water supply is responsible for a clicking sound from the ice maker. To fix this:

  • Switch the appliance off and turn on the shut-off arm of the ice maker if it's turned off.

  • Ensure that the water hose is connected and not loose. If it is damaged, replace it.

  • If the issue persists, consult a repairman.

Usual refrigerator sounds

As mentioned earlier, like most appliances, refrigerators are expected to make sounds. Therefore, not all sounds are a cause for alarm. For instance, a gurgling sound caused by refrigerant flowing through the condenser coils can sometimes be heard when the door is closed, or the fridge defrosts. And a mild buzzing sound could be the fans automatically turning on to maximize performance. However, consult a repairman when the noise is loud and intrusive, and you can’t ascertain the problem.
